Writers on Track feature YMIR with Kannibalen Records, sub-published by David Murphy et Cie. As a pseudonymous producer and singer, YMIR brings together alternative rock, dark pop, and electronic music, creating a vocal-led style that lives between beauty and destruction.
What’s your favorite part of the songwriting process?
Lately, I would say the experimenting/sound design phase. It reminds me of when I was a kid playing with Lego blocks, connecting different pieces to see what it would create. I love the feeling of trying and failing until finally you create something that sparks a slew of potential compositional paths you can take.
What’s your biggest session highlight so far?
Recently I was at a songwriting camp where I got to meet other Canadian artists/writers and work with them to write a new song demo. It was special because of how well we all connected musically but more so personally, I don’t often write with others so this was a very special “eureka” moment for me.
How much do current market and track trends impact your creative process?
Not that much, I primarily work in EDM but mostly do my own thing. I find myself deep in rabbit holes of niche genres looking for inspiration and then introducing my pop and rock/prog background into the mix to find that sweet spot of familiarity and the unknown. Although I sometimes take a peek at the pop and rock world to see how it’s evolving.
