Writers on Track features Toronto-based recording artist Witch Prophet with High Priestess Publishing. The singer-songwriter is known for her rich soundscapes of layered vocals, loops, raps, and harmonies set against hip-hop, jazz, and soul-inspired beats. Long-listed for the Polaris Music Prize in 2023, she uses storytelling to channel her experiences, emotions, and cultural heritage into music that resonates. She is currently preparing for the release of her upcoming album, Words Are Spells / Thoughts Are Magic, a 14-track exploration of magic, self-care, love, and transformation.
What’s your favorite part of the songwriting process?
I love the moment when a melody or lyric comes through almost effortlessly, as if it was meant to be. It’s like a form of channeling. I also love the storytelling aspect, shaping emotions and experiences into words that people can connect with. Whether I’m writing alone or collaborating, the most exciting part is when a song starts to take on a life of its own, evolving beyond the initial idea into something unexpected and powerful.
What’s your biggest session highlight so far?
Working with my good friend Latashá (LA-based rapper) on the Makda Remix was an incredible experience. The remix was eventually turned into a one-minute-long music video co-created by Latashá and her partner Jahmel Reynolds, which was sold as an NFT for $12,000! That moment was huge for me and SUN SUN—not only in terms of the collaboration but also in exploring new ways to release and monetize music in the digital space.
How much do current market and track trends impact your creative process?
Not much. I stay true to my sound and vision, but I’m always aware of how music is evolving. I take inspiration from different sounds and movements, but I never create just to fit a trend—I create to tell my story.
