What’s your favorite part of the songwriting process?
The best part for me is the storytelling. The opportunity to lose yourself in the process and the song’s emotional signature, be it on your own or with collaborators. To design it to the best of your ability so that others can connect with the story in the same way you have. The knowledge that there is the potential to connect with people in such an intimate way lights me up.
What’s your biggest session highlight so far?
I began writing with my two friends Matt Mays and Ro Joaquim a few years ago – we regularly meet up and write songs with the only confines being that the process needs to fill our cups as songwriters. I’ve learned so much in the process – in fact, I think we continue to learn so much from each other. It’s become a judgement-free creative safe space for us. We’ve more recently started listening back to the songs in our collective arsenal and they’re some of my favourite songs that I’ve ever been part of writing. It’s a cool place to be when you have a bunch of invigorating material and get to ruminate on what comes next.
How much do current market and track trends impact your creative process?
I think we’re in a really interesting time when there are fewer and fewer “correct” ways of doing things in the music industry – it’s like the wild west out there, which is equal parts scary and thrilling. It puts a really exciting value on risk, on uniqueness, on an artist’s creative gut and their individual voice. While it’s helpful to have awareness of what’s out there when you’re engaging with the market, I think the best thing an artist can do to cut through the noise is to hone their own voice, whether or not it adheres to trends: it’s guaranteed to be the thing only you can bring to the table.
