This month, Writers on Track spotlights Grammy-nominated songwriter and producer Josh Ramsay with Downtown Music Publishing. In addition to being the frontman of the multi-platinum band Marianas Trench, Ramsay is also renowned for co-writing and producing Carly Rae Jepsen’s global hit “Call Me Maybe”. His songwriting and production credits include work with Nickelback, 5 Seconds of Summer, and Fefe Dobson. His 2022 solo album, The Josh Ramsay Show, highlights his versatility with a dynamic mix of genres. Meanwhile, Marianas Trench’s latest album, Haven, weaves orchestral textures with rock influences, delivering the band’s most expansive sound yet.
What’s your favorite part of the songwriting process?
There are two favorite parts. I don’t do demos, I record as I write. The first time I hear the verse into the chorus – if it’s working, I’m very excited. That’s the first test. The second-best part is finishing the final mix when there’s no tweaking left to do.
What’s your biggest session highlight so far?
I get really excited on days that I’m doing something big. Producing a full orchestra is very challenging. There are so many things to worry about, but all the challenges are what makes it so rewarding. Especially after I’ve probably been listening to the song with fake virtual instruments up to that point, hearing it come to life with real players is thrilling.
How much do current market and track trends impact your creative process?
I think a smart writer stays aware of current trends but shouldn’t feel chained to them either. I always feel that you want your work to fit in the current landscape, but you don’t want to lose what makes you unique either. It’s a moving target for sure.
