This month we feature Ian Kay. Hailing from the European punk and garage scene, Ian brings a fresh perspective to the music world. With his debut solo album, “Walk That Road Again,” produced and mixed by Jeremy Yeremian in Los Angeles, he adds a touch of pop while drawing influences from iconic bands like The Kinks, The Hollies, The Byrds, and The Easybeats.
What’s your favorite part of the songwriting process?
The entire album was inspired by a broken heart. Crafting the stories behind each of the songs was
pretty easy and fluid, but some fine tuning was needed to make those stories readable and
clear. This was intense. It involved some rewriting and polishing for both music and lyrics.
Jeremy Yeremian and I work back and forth for 8 months.
What’s your biggest session highlight so far?
My favorite moment was to hear how the songs that we crafted with a simple DAW came to
life layers after layers in the studio. It was magical! Everything became so dimensional and big.
It finally started sounding like a record!
How much do current market and track trends impact your creative process?
About current markets and trends… frankly we do not want to be ambulance chasers. It is
pretty easy for us because we are deeply emerged in a context, some call it a niche. That genre
is not really mainstream anymore but it is deeply rooted in our collective memories. So… we
have the freedom to do anything we want. We try to follow a direction that is inspired by years of
passionate crate digging, stage diving and love making.
