We spoke with Pamela Nichol, Supervisor, Royalty Processing & Distribution at CMRRA about her vital role in the CMRRA ecosystem and how she finds satisfaction in her job.
Tell us about your role in royalties at CMRRA?
I oversee some of the royalty processing aspects of our quarterly distributions related to areas like Independent Label, Suspense release, YouTube and some of the Pay-As-You-Press mechanical licensing process. Alongside this, even though it’s a lot of work with many many extra hours, I work diligently at the end of each royalty processing cycle, finalizing each of the distributions statements and payment details to post the associated details to CMRRA Direct and provide all the appropriate information to our finance team to process payments to our clients. Post distribution, it’s back to preparing for the next royalty distribution.
What gives you satisfaction in your day at CMRRA?
Other than the lovely people I work with at CMRRA and our amazing clients, ultimately, it’s seeing the final outcome of the day-to-day work the entire team does at the end of each quarterly royalty distribution. It’s a lot of work but completing each distribution and providing the results to our clients is the ultimate satisfaction.
What are you listening to? Do you have a song that just sets the tone for you in terms of inspiration?
What a question! Other than replaying my favourite songs, it changes everyday. Anything by The Sounds just makes me happy! I could listen to them on shuffle everyday. They recently did a virtual performance last month, which was just great to watch (they are amazing live) and to hear some new songs like “Safe And Sound” and “Things We Do For Love” from their soon-to-be-released new album. I can’t wait for it and the next live tour, whenever that will be, I will be there!
In addition, I love listening to singer-songwriter Banners! I’ve been listening to Banners for a few years now, since seeing him live at Osheaga a few years ago. All I can say is, beautiful words, beautiful songs, beautiful voice and amazing live! This was my last live concert (in December at the Opera House in Toronto) before the world dramatically changed.
[Editors note: We checked our music database and wanted to mention that The Sounds repertoire are administered by Reservoir Media Management Inc and Kobalt Music Publishing Ltd. and Banners are represented by Kobalt Music Publishing Ltd.]
