Many of our publisher clients already know Michael Mackie who is the Manager of Repertoire. Michael began his employment with CMRRA in the Royalties department in 1997. Before joining CMRRA, he studied English and Mass Communications, graduating from York University.
After gaining experience in the Royalties department, Michael moved on to the position of Licensing Team Liaison for Sony Music. Here he was trained in all aspects of the business which provided a solid base of understanding for his future roles. This intensive experience helped when he moved on to the role of Supervisor of Membership Services and Copyright. Michael used his strong background understanding of all aspects of the music business to connect with other supervisors, as he had a firm grasp of the different needs of various departments.
Earlier this year, Michael was promoted to Manager of Repertoire. In this new position he supervises the copyright and membership services staff through their day to day functions. Michael is heavily involved with the rolling out of the Common Works Registration into CMRRA’s new License and Royalty Distribution System (LDS) during this period of change, Michael is adeptly managing the many moving parts and shifting priorities involved in the conversion process.
Michael is tremendously proud of his team. They are all very experienced and make doing his job a lot easier, as they can all take on more advanced inquiries and complicated projects. The trust Michael has in his staff has led to a collaborate style of supervision. He says that his people are full of pleasant surprises and that he is proud of all their unique and creative solutions.
Michael appreciates the constantly changing and evolving nature of CMRRA. He thrives on change and so the constant movement in the company captures his attention and allows him to grow through each challenge he faces. Michael is constantly pushing himself and striving for something better.
Michael is particularly fond of the accepting and tolerant atmosphere here at CMRRA. ”I have worked with some truly amazing people, many of whom have turned into life-long friends,” he says.
Outside of work, Michael’s top priority is travel. Some of his favorite destinations have been Barcelona, Istanbul, and experiencing the amazing music scene in Glasgow. One of his favourite places in Canada is the super lively Maritime hotspot, St. John’s, Newfoundland. He has just returned from two weeks in Brazil. While in Toronto, Michael enjoys road biking and exploring Canada’s growing craft beer scene.
Michael has a wide range of musical tastes. His most recent discovery is Dorothy Ashby. He enjoys anything released on the German label Kompakt, a home for electronic and ambient music.
