What’s your favourite part of the songwriting process?
Whenever I hear an idea for a song in my head or hear a cool word/phrase that inspires me, I love diving in to bring the idea to life. The hunt for words and melodies, making sure that the original idea gets honoured and brought to life in its best form is so special to me. I think as songwriters, we are incredibly lucky to be able to bring something to life that didn’t exist before. Bringing ideas to life is a beautiful thing, and it is my favourite feeling.
What’s your biggest session highlight so far?
About a year ago I had a writing session with fellow East Coast songwriters Leanne Hoffman (Halifax, NS) and Ben Aitken (Charlottetown, PEI). I had never met Leanne before, and working with new people can sometimes be a bit intimidating for me. That said, she showed up with so many brilliant ideas, and we clicked instantly. The three of us had an amazing flow going, and we came up with what I think is one of my favourite songs that will be on my forthcoming album. I find there can sometimes be co-writes where two people take the lead while the third person takes the back seat, but this co-write everyone was contributing equally, and we were bouncing ideas off each other the whole time until we found what we were looking for.
How much do current market and track trends impact your creative process?
Not very much. Since I began writing and creating music almost 10 years ago, I always set out to write songs that I like. that resonate with me and where I am in my life. I don’t tend to allow any outside noise into my creative process. That said, I do think that the music I listen to inspires me and subconsciously finds ways to leave its mark on the music I am making in a subtle way.
