JUNO Award-winning Simone Denny, with Red Brick Songs, is this month’s Writers on Track feature. Known for her chart-topping performances with groups like Love Inc., BKS, Belters Only, and Widelife, her dynamic vocals have propelled numerous beloved songs across the globe.
What’s your favourite part of the songwriting process?
I love the initial part of the process when you hear a track and toss ideas around. The endless possibilities. It’s absolute gold when you finally create a lyric or melody that you feel magically connects you with your audience. There’s no better feeling for me. Remixes are also fun. Although it’s the production side of the process, to hear someone’s interpretation of what you’ve written, further solidifying the connection with the audience is amazing. It’s always all about connection.
What’s your biggest session highlight so far?
The discovery of being a songwriter is the highlight because the more I work and write with other artists and producers, the more I learn more about myself. It pushes me to be better. To connect quickly and on a deeper level. You never stop learning and growing as a creative. Having to think on my feet and adapt to each session is truly a highlight. And when the song is finished and demo’d it’s truly a rush.
How much do current market and track trends impact your creative process?
At times I follow the trend, if needed. For me, it’s about writing a great song. I’m a multi-genre artist and I write for all genres. So creatively I adapt depending on the artist, producers, or sessions I’m writing for.
