This month’s Front of House is Tayler Dobney, Online Licensing and Claims Administrator at CMRRA. After graduating from Fanshawe College’s Music Industry Arts program, Tayler began her career at CMRRA. She takes pride in knowing that her work contributes to ensuring that royalties reach the rightful publishers and songwriters.
Congratulations on 8 years at CMRRA. You have held various roles and currently you hold the position of Online Licensing and Claims Administrator, can you tell us what that means and what your day-to-day looks like?
Thank you! It’s hard to believe that 8 years have passed already. As an Online Licensing and Claims Administrator, I work on various tasks in my day, usually at the song level, updating the musical work data within our databases and matching recording information from the various digital service providers. I also assist with priority updates to our publisher accounts with our Repertoire & Client Services department. As well, I support registrations for our Unclaimed Works Portal, ensuring that our clients as well as non-clients have proper access to submit claims and match their own works. Often you can find me helping with any number of priority assignments through various departments at CMRRA. We’re a small but mighty team here and sometimes it’s all hands-on deck!
What led you to work at CMRRA and what have you enjoyed most about working here?
Ever since I started playing guitar when I was 12, I’ve always been interested and involved in the “world of music” and knew that it would always be a part of my life. Shortly after graduating from the Music Industry Arts program at Fanshawe College in 2015, I knew that I wanted to be involved with the behind-the-scenes business side of the industry. That’s when I found myself at CMRRA’s doorstep! It’s been very rewarding to be a part of such an amazing group of people doing great work in the Canadian music space! As for what I’ve enjoyed most, I love knowing that I am making a difference in helping to get the money to the publishers and the songwriters to whom it belongs, it is very fulfilling.
When you’re not at work, how do you spend your time?
I am definitely a “homebody”. I like to describe myself as a person with a lot of “micro-hobbies”, so I usually have a lot of different things on the go. Whether I’m working on an art/craft project, learning to cook something new, playing around with photography, playing old video games, or working on music projects in my home studio, there’s always something going on at my house!
Beyond CMRRA, how else does music play a large part in your life?
Music plays a big part in my life outside of CMRRA! As I mentioned, my partner and I have a small music studio space in our home that we use for writing and recording music. For the last couple of years, we’ve been focusing our work in the studio on my partner’s solo heavy metal project, Acydia. Together, we work on all aspects of creating, from writing to recording to engineering and mixing. It’s a ton of fun and keeps me very connected to the creative side of music. I also have a cherished collection of vinyl records that I listen to when it’s time to kick back and just relax a little bit. There’s nothing quite like physical music media in my mind!
