This month we feature Canadian songwriters/alternative country and folk music group, The Bros. Landreth, formed by brothers Joey and Dave Landreth. Their recent album Come Morning won a JUNO Award for Contemporary Roots Album of the Year. In 2022 American blues singer and guitarist Bonnie Raitt recorded her own version of their standout track “Made Up Mind” on her Just Like That… album and won the Grammy for Best Americana Performance. Catch them at various festivals this summer including Eric Clapton’s famed Crossroads Guitar Festival in Los Angeles on September 23 and 24.
What’s your favorite part of the songwriting process?
The work of songwriting is definitely satisfying, but for me, the most delightful part is the reveal at the end. Once you’ve finally set the last pen stroke, the revisions and edits are finished, and you get to see it as a wholly conceived thing — that’s the payoff for me. I like being a part of bringing some new creative idea into the world and getting to stare it in the face for the first time!
What’s your biggest session highlight so far?
Realistically, the best sessions have been pretty understated. When Joe and I finish something that’s really impactful and we know we’ve written something special, those are the best moments and they usually don’t have any big fanfare. I will share this, one of our first professional co-writes was with Jonathan Singleton. It was a blind date, but he was kind and patient and we got right into working on an idea. In short, Joey and I got “schooled”. He was a monster writer, and his ideas and verses were all so poetic and perfect. We fought really hard to make sure we got some words in, but he really carried the session. He didn’t compromise on any words or lines unless they were just right and watching him fight for the right idea was so inspiring. To this day, we still reference him in our sessions when we’re struggling to find that missing piece.
How much do current market and track trends impact your creative process?
Not one single iota! We’ve always written straight from the heart and any success that we’ve had as writers has just been purely coincidental.
