We spoke with Sandra Nettleton, our Director of Licensing and Royalties at CMRRA, about reaching the 30 year milestone working at CMRRA and the changes she’s witnessed along the way.
Congratulations on your 30 year milestone! You’ve witnessed the transition from paper statements to electronic files, what is the most significant development that you’ve been involved with?
I started CMRRA in a part time capacity while going to school. In my final year of University, I was offered a full-time position and, since then, I’ve been fortunate to be given several opportunities for growth and continue to be challenged.
CMRRA has certainly undergone several monumental changes and developments over time and I’m grateful to have been part of the evolution of changes over the last 30 years! While there have been many significant developments, the most notable in my mind was the launch of the enhanced CMRRA Direct platform, which provides our clients with easy electronic access to their statements, licences and catalogues.
You work with a team of focused CMRRA employees who help process a monumental amount of data. Within this environment, what does success look like? Our team processes an enormous amount of data and ensuring we meet our quarterly invoicing and distribution deadlines is paramount. One of my proudest moments for our team is the seamless transition to new data management systems while still meeting our goals and distribution deadlines.
I’ve heard cottage life is something you truly enjoy with your family. Has the pandemic allowed some quiet time away from the uncertainty of the pandemic? Our cottage is a great getaway located in the beautiful Algonquin Highlands. The pandemic has definitely allowed us more time to escape to the woods with our family.
Where does music fit in your life? I’ve always been inspired by strong female singer-songwriters and their ability to create and perform. My interest in music is quite widespread across various genres but Stevie Nicks, with her distinctive voice, mystical stage persona, and symbolic lyrics, is one of my long-time favourites.
