On February 26, 2019, CMRRA unveiled a new, free online Unclaimed Works Portal powered by CMRRA Direct to give publishers and songwriters the ability to search for unpaid digital uses of their repertoire in Canada. The portal provides easy access to sound recording data aggregated from multiple digital services by the International Standard Recording Code (ISRC). Publishers can search the database through a number of data points and match individual tracks to musical works. CMRRA will incorporate these new matches into its database for future royalty payments. Additionally, publishers are able to submit missing copyright ownership claims on musical works. After validating a claim, CMRRA will invoice services and generate royalty payments for affiliated rightsholders across all digital services licensed by CMRRA. The Unclaimed Works Portal is an exciting new service that fulfills CMRRA’s broader mission of making the business side of music easier for creators.
