Writers on Track features Jenson Vaughan with Ultra Music Publishing. Following his success co-writing the Grammy-nominated, JUNO-winning track “This is What It Feels Like” by Armin van Buuren and Trevor Guthrie, Jenson refined his songwriting craft, later penning hits for renowned artists such as Madonna, Kelly Rowland, and Britney Spears.
What’s your favorite part of the songwriting process?
For me, it’s about tapping into that place where I feel like I’m no longer creating the song myself, but rather transcribing something that already exists. When this happens, I can close my eyes and hear the song before I’ve even begun. The lyrics feel as though they’re being delivered to me, and all I have to do is write them down as quickly as they come. Some call this the flow state, source energy, or the Universe. I just call it the place of truth, and I strive to be there as much as possible when I create.
What’s your biggest session highlight so far?
There really isn’t a single session that stands out above the rest, but there is one week of sessions that does: a recent songwriting camp I attended in Dubai. From the luxurious arrival to the world-class studios and accommodations, the test drive in a Bugatti to the yacht party around Palm Jumeirah, the incredible talent, to the impeccable vibes, it truly was a week to remember. I couldn’t help but think, “Wow, look where my little hobby has taken me.” It’s also the camp where the global hit “I Adore You” was written.
How much do current market and track trends impact your creative process
Personally, very little. I see this more in producers, especially dance producers, who are constantly chasing current trends. And there is some validity to that. But for me, especially now, my goal is to write timeless songs that work as well today as they will 10 years from now—or as they would have 10 years ago.
